The public is invited to take part in a unique conversation about the future of Hudson River communities that is taking place on a barge that has been transformed into a floating town hall that will tie up at the city dock on the Newburgh waterfront this weekend.
The OurHudson Barge Tour is part of an unprecedented effort to marshal grassroots ideas for envisioning a prosperous future for the region, and to lead a collaborative effort to achieve that vision. The 2011 barge tour will feature the premiere of Hudson Rising!, a documentary film that explores the issues and opportunities facing the region.
The OurHudson Barge is an industrial relic, the Pennsylvania Railroad Barge No. 399, re-born this year as a floating town hall, exhibition space and movie theater.
The barge tour is the latest phase of the OurHudson project, a collaborative effort to restore the economic vitality of riverfront towns while improving the health of the river and protecting the Hudson Valley’s scenic beauty. By staging a public listening tour and convening six task forces representing dozens of organizations, OurHudson has developed a set of reports on key issues, including agriculture, culture and education, economic development, land use, transportation and environmental quality.
The barge tour will showcase many ideas for improving the region, and lead a public conversation on the steps needed to help the Hudson Valley reach its full potential.
