New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that residents in the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown area have some of the longest commute times in the nation. It takes about 32.2 minutes for local commuters to get to or from work, according to the data,
The study attributed the lengthy commute in part to the fact that many area residents are commuting into the NY-NJ metro area The New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA Metro Area had the longest commute in the nation, at 34.6 minutes, followed by Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, Va. at 33.4 minutes. The Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown area came in third.
The Census data was gathered in 2009 and released on Thursday as part of its American Community Survey.
Great Falls, Montana, came in with the shortest commute time nationwide, at 14.2 minutes.
Another study released earlier this year put the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown area near the bottom of the pile when it comes to providing public transportation. The study by the Brookings Institute looked at how effectively transit connects people and jobs within 100 metropolitan areas in the U.S. That study found that forty-six percent of residents have access to public transit here, with an average wait for service of 51 minutes.
