Councilwoman Bell is withdrawing from city council discussions about the details of a 2012 budget, saying that the city still has not taken serious steps to rescue the city and its residents from financial distress since the last round of talks in 2010.
In a letter to her fellow council members, Bell wrote that she refuses to be part of a process that can only have the outcome of further harming the people of Newburgh. She noted that “since the last budget, there have been no substantive revenue generating actions taken.” She also criticizes the acting city manager’s dismissal of an offer from state Senator Bill Larkin to create a Municipal Assistance Corporation that would allow the city to borrow at lower interest rates.
In her letter, Bell indicated she would like to be notified when the rest of the council has a “workable plan.”
