Piano Prodigy in Free Concert at Library
Hear the sounds of the keyboard by gifted musician/composer Matthew Fishteyn who will perform jazz, ragtime, pop, rock’n roll and original compositions at a free concert at the Newburgh Free Library on Sun., Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. Eighteen-year-old Matthew has been performing since he was six and has grown into a an award-winning composer and pianist. He graduated from the Special Musical School of America and received 3rd place in the Young Musicians Competition in Wagner College in 2007. This accomplished young musician seamlessly switches from a variety of music styles and transforms a musical performance into a more personal and interactive experience. Blessing of the Pets
Bring your pet to Mount Saint Mary College at 12 noon on Sunday, where Fr. Kevin Mackin, OFM, president of Mount Saint Mary College, will bless pets in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Area neighbors, along with Mount Saint Mary College alumni, students, and families, are welcome to bring their furry, feathered or finned companions (leashes/carriers please) to the patio outside of Founders Chapel, Guzman Hall, 330 Powell Avenue, in Newburgh
The blessing, honoring Saint Francis of Assisi’s love for animals, is part of the college’s Alumni and Family Weekend.
Improvisation at the Railroad Playhouse
The Hudson Valley’s Mission Improv-able return for a third dose of fast-firing fun, showcasing some of the best improv in the New York area. Tickets for this event are just $10 – bring a friend!
Seasoned improvisers David H Cohen, Bryan Cohen, Alan Angevine, Alec Vanacore and Chris Tighe are back together again by popular demand. The evening features original scenes, songs, poetry, and puppetry all based on audience suggestions!
Manhattan Short Film Festival
Join the Global Critic’s Circle when the Manhattan Short Film Festival comes to the Downing Film Center on Saturday, October 1, at 5 pm. Screenings of 10 internationally acclaimed short films that are the finalists in the festival will take place, with audience members asked to vote on their favorites.
This year the Festival received 598 entries from 48 countries and the work of the ten finalists are being screened over 700 times in over 200 cities spanning six continents during one week.
Audiences at each venue will be handed a voting card and asked to vote for the one Film they think should win. The winner will be announced on October 2nd at 10 pm and posted at ManhattanShort.com This screening is your chance to not only see the next generation of filmmakers from around the world, but to vote on them as well.
Save the Date: Open Studios Tour
Step into the studios of Newburgh’s artists and explore their creative spaces in the Open Studios Tour on October 15 and 16. The self-guided tour will take you the studios of Alejandro Dron, Kevin Kearns, Richard Harper, Keith Nieto, Will Teran, Terri Vargas, Gerardo Castro, John Delk, Kate Ferriter and Michael Gabor.
Maps for the self-guided tour are available for pick-up at Newburgh Art Supply, 5 Grand Street in Newburgh. A kick-off party, with free admission, is planned at The Wherehouse at 119 Liberty on Friday, October 14.
