Birthday Party Turns Violent After Party-Crashers Arrive
Town of Newburgh police faced a rash of violent incidents in the past several days, beginning Saturday night when a private birthday party for a teenage girl got out of control.
Police say that dozens of uninvited teens crashed the party at the Elvedge Restaurant on North Plank Road, creating a disturbance inside and leading to them being forced to leave. Several more disputes began near the exit door and two males were shot around 11:30 pm.
A 16-year-old Newburgh boy and a 23-year-old man with no known address were wounded in the upper bodies. Partygoers then began fleeing the area. A half dozen large windows at the front of the restaurant were then smashed as were the windows of several cars in the lot. Additional damage occurred a couple blocks away.
The 16-year-old was taken to St. Lukes Hospital and transferred to Westchester Medical Center. The 23-year-old was admitted to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. The gunshot wounds do not appear to be life threatening.
Police have identified the shooter as a man connected to the restaurant. No charges have been filed yet and the investigation is on-going.
Police Capture Suspects After a Half-Mile Foot Search
Three hours after the first incident, town of Newburgh police responded to a report of a fight and shots fired at the Knights Inn motel on Route 17K. When police arrived, several men fled across Rt. 17K. Officers from several agencies began a search of the area and two suspects were located in a swampy area about a half-mile away. Several other suspects got away. A revolver used in the shooting was recovered.
Police report that the shooting occurred after the managers of the bar at Knights Inn told several men to leave after they apparently snick inside. Witnesses told police that one man pulled a handgun and fired several shots inside the bar and in the lobby area of the motel. About 60 people were in the bar at the time but there were no injuries.
Following the investigation by K-9 units from the New Windsor police department, the New York State police, the Orange County Sheriffs and police from Walden and Montgomery, Daniel Nava, 23, of Beacon Street, Newburgh was charged with attempted gang assault 2nd, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment 1st.
