If you happen to see the undead roaming the streets of Newburgh Saturday don’t be alarmed, it’s not the zombie apocalypse but instead the second annual Newburgh Zombie Walk.
The walk will take the zombie horde from the Newburgh Recreation Center down to the Newburgh Armory on South William Street. This gathering of ghouls is sponsored by The Wherehouse Restaurant and is part of their second Psychedelic Zombie Bar-B-Que at the Armory.
Wherehouse Owner Dan Brown said the zombie walk will shamble down Lake Street and then down Broadway to Route 9W, then continue south until the group reaches the armory. He added that people get transformed for the zombie walk at the Newburgh Recreation Center starting around 10:30 am, and the walk will start at 11 am.
The first zombie walk and bar-b-que was in May of 2010. Brown said he got the idea when a band, the Dead Elvi, came to play at the restaurant in October of 2009. The surf rock band played a song called Psychedelic Zombie Bar-B-Que and it dawned on him.
“A bunch of girls stood up and started dancing, and I was standing near the side door looking out at the empty field next to the restaurant and I thought, ‘zombies, bar-b-que, and go-go girls, I’ve got an idea.”
The first bar-b-que and zombie walk happened in the field next door to the restaurant. Brown said it went well but he wanted to do more this year and that’s when he partnered with the armory. Brown explained that space allows for more bands and $5 from each $20 admission will go to support the Armory.
The barbeque will be held there from 10:30 am to midnight with music and food all day. People looking for more than just zombies can check out the 20 bands that will be playing through out the day. The Wherehouse will also have a full beer garden with 20 micro brews available, as well as zombie themed games and ill also be showing zombie movies throughout the day.
