The Newburgh City Council learned Thursday about plans to install a left-hand turn signal on Broadway for traffic that wants to go north or south on Robinson Avenue. City engineer Craig Marti said that trucking companies requested the change because trucks find it difficult to make the turn without a green arrow.
Mayor Nicholas Valentine said he remembers when that intersection had a turn signal, a statement quickly contradicted by George Garrison, the city’s Director of Public Works, who said there never was a turn signal there. “I’m older than you,” Valentine reminded Garrison. “And it wasn’t horses, “ he added, “it was cars.”
Engineer Marti said a study is required by the state Department of Transportation before any changes can be made.
