Solar-powered energy is coming to Newburgh Town Hall thanks to an energy efficiency grant received through Orange County. .On Monday, the town council awarded the project to Real Time Technology Lighting of Middletown.
Before they voted, town engineer James Osborne told the town council that new, high power exterior lights in the parking lots at the complex will be up and running in the next 45 days. In addition, two dozen solar panels will be installed on the building’s roof, part of the $52,000 project that promotes renewable energy.
Osborne explained that the solar panels originally had been planned to power the lights directly. However, it was found to be more cost efficient to feed the electrical energy straight back into the town’s meter, where it will offset all electrical costs.
A member of the audience, Pat Williams, later questioned how long it will take to recoup the money spent on solar equipment and Supervisor Wayne Booth reminded her it is being paid for by grant money that would be used by another municipality if not Newburgh. Booth added that the town police station is also getting updated energy-efficient lighting, a conversion paid for by Central Hudson.
