From SUNY Orange
The SS Columbia, the oldest surviving passenger steamship in the US built in 1902, is coming to Newburgh, hopefully next year, to undergo a complete restoration, then to be put into service as a dayliner between NYC and Albany.
The 200+ foot steamship, originally built to carry 3000 passengers, is a grand example of the best in engineering and aesthetics of the time, with mahogany paneling, leaded glass, gilt moldings, a grand staircase, and an open air ballroom.
The directors of the restoration project will be coming to Newburgh on Wednesday, October 26 at 4 pm in the Great Room, Kaplan Hall, at SUNY Orange’s Newburgh Campus, to present information on the history of the SS Columbia and the restoration project, and to gather ideas on ways the Newburgh community can become a part of the restoration.
The public is invited to this lively program and informative discussion.
