The city of Newburgh police will lose one lieutenant’s position and at least two officers will take early retirement as part of an agreement worked out with the Police Superior Officers Association.
Acting city manager Richard Herbek told the city council Monday that the agreement with the PSOA, which represents the 15 lieutenants and sergeants in the department, includes a lump sum pay out of $40,000 as an incentive for retirement. As many as four officers are considering the buyout, Herbek said.
Herbek also described other savings in the agreement, including an elimination of a shift deferential and the loss of one holiday. He said that the early retirements could save the jobs of two-to-three police officers who are represented by the Police Benevolent Association (PBA). . He’d like to see the PBA and the CSEA, which represents other city employees, make similar cost-cutting deals with the city before it finalizes its budget next month
In his preliminary budget, Herbek is seeking to lay off 15 police officers.
