A broken water main has led the Orange County Health Department to advise residents of a pocket of the town in the area between South Plank Road and Route 52 to boil their water.
The main broke on Wednesday, October 26 and affects about 100 homes. Town officials said the area of concern is the water quality on Route 52 between Winona Avenue to Fifth Avenue, including all of Fifth Avenue from South Plank Road to Woodlawn Terrace and Brookside Avenue.
The Orange County Health Department recommends that all water used from this supply be rapidly boiled for at least two minutes prior to use for either drinking or food preparation purposes. Another alternative is to use bottled water, certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health. Residents should continue this practice until such time that it is demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Health Department that the repairs have been completed and analyses have been performed to verify that the water is safe to drink.
If you have any questions relative to the utilization of water from this supply, please do not hesitate to contact the Town of Newburgh Water Department at 564-7813 or the Chadwick Lake Filter Plant at 564-2180 or the Orange County Department of Health (telephone: 845-291-2331).
