Downed wires heavy with snow caused power outages throughout the area.
You may have to get used to it – that’s the message for nearly 150,000 Central Hudson customers who are without power on Sunday following an early season snow storm that snapped huge tree branches and knocked down power lines all over eastern Orange County, western Putnam and southern Dutchess counties.
Central Hudson spokesman John Maserjian says that the heavy wet snow caused significant damage and that power in some areas will likely not be restored for a week. He said the storm’s impact is on a par with the one-two punch from two snowstorms in February-March 2010 that left a few more customers without power compared to this October surprise.
Residents in the city of Newburgh experienced a larger number of power outages than their neighbors in the town. About seventy-five percent of Central Hudson’s 11, 114 were without power on Sunday in the City of Newburgh, while in the town, half of the customers had lost power.
Central Hudson’s Maserjian said that the company is expecting a fleet of re-enforcements to drive in from Chattanooga, Tennessee tonight with trucks and a workforce of 100 that will get to work on Monday. They will supplement the crews that have been at work since snow first started to fall Saturday.
