An overgrown and littered patch of Broadway in downtown Newburgh has become the first target of a group of fired-up business leaders and development officials who say they are determined to restore the former glory of the city, one neighborhood at a time.
The Greater Newburgh Partnership, headed by St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital President and CEO Allan Atzrott, organized a volunteer effort that began last Saturday to tear down a chain link fence around the lot at the corner of Broadway and Johnston Street. Inside, the clean up of the vacant lots began.
The Partnership, which includes private businesses and the Newburgh Community Land Bank, plans to bring better lighting and security cameras to the area that stretches from Broadway and Johnston Street to First and Lander Streets. Eventually, the Partnership intends to reclaim portions of the city block by block.
