To the Editor,
Reading the media reports regarding Orange County Legislator Michael Amo’s claims of “memory lapse” as his reason for voting against defunding the Valley View Center for Nursing Care and Rehabilitation are quite telling. He now would like a “re-vote” to happen so he can support the defunding of the center and go against senior citizens and workers in the Valley View situation.
This is political calculation and back room pressure at its worse, and certainly not a lapse in memory causing Amo’s reverse course.
The 300-pound gorilla in the room we should not lose sight of is County Executive Eddie Diana who is the force pushing the sale of the senior home. The audacity of Mr. Diana’s pitch last year at a $114 million price tag to build a new government center, while arguing to defund Valley View to save $19 million and put several hundred employees on the street while threatening the homes of our senior citizens is deplorable.
Mr. Diana, perhaps you should review your thinking in these matters and put people before politics. The voting public, our senior citizens and those who would directly challenge your governance and leadership are watching, do the right thing.
