If you love jazz from-Latin and bebop to funk, and big band, then you should head over to SUNY Orange’s Orange Hall this Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19 for Jazz Weekend 2011.
Six great ensembles will perform on two nights in Orange Hall Theatre, plus jazz will be in the Gallery before the concerts and between sets each evening.
Latin Jazz is Hot Friday Night
Friday is Latin Night, showcasing performances by the Marko Marcinko Latin Jazz Quintet at 7 pm and Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet at 8:15 pm, which will have the audience dancing in the aisles.
Finishing the evening at 9:30 will be the exquisite and breathtaking sounds of the Edmar Castaneda Trio, featuring Edmar Castaneda on jazz harp with of Dave Silliman, percussion/drums and Andrea Tierra, vocals.
The Joint is Jumping Saturday Night
Then, on Saturday, two very different quintets start and finish the evening with a superb big band in the middle.
At 7 pm, the Chris Parker Quintet with piano, bass, drums, violin, and featuring Peter Epstein on sax, play a mix of original Latin, funky, and straight ahead jazz tunes. Then, at 8:15pm, the big band sound comes on stage with the 17-piece Westchester Jazz Orchestra. To cap off the evening and finish the jazz weekend on a high note, the renowned Joe Lovano Us Five with the unique elements of two drummers, piano, and bass, and featuring Joe Lovano on saxophone will play bop. This final set begins at 9:30pm.
Each evening in Orange Hall Gallery, jazz will begin at 6:30pm with CDS-3: Carlton Jay, piano, Darius Molfetas, guitar, and Mike Sutton, bass. In addition, the group will play between sets.
Emceeing this two-evening event is Tim Malcolm, Arts & Entertainment Editor of the Times Herald-Record.
