Theresa Brown, the head of the Fine and Performing Arts Department of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, is the recipient of the Arts in Education Award presented by the Orange County Arts Council.
Brown, who has led the department since 2003 and worked in the district for 20 years, was recognized for building a thriving arts culture in the school district. She oversees all visual, performing arts and music department programs, as well as setting objectives for the district. “I have a great job,” Brown said at the awards dinner last, “I get to be with the kids and have oversight.”
When not at school, Brown is an active volunteer who is on the board of directors of Safe Harbors of the Hudson and works with both the Railroad Playhouse and Trestle, Inc.
She says that she believes that her goal as an educator is for students to be able to enjoy music, drawing or dancing with their own children for the rest of their lives.
