Newburgh’s representative in the state capitol, Assemblyman Tom Kirwan, passed away Monday at age 78, according to the city’s mayor who said he had gotten word of Kirwan’s death a half hour before the start of Monday’s city council meeting.
Mayor Nicholas Valentine praised the long career of fellow Republican Tom Kirwan, who was first elected to the assembly in 1994. He represented the 100th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Beacon, Newburgh and Poughkeepsie and the towns of Marlboro, Newburgh, Lloyd and Shawangunk. Prior to his election to the Assembly, Kirwan served for 28 years with the New York State Police, retiring with the position of Lieutenant in the Bureau of Criminal Investigations. He also spent four years with the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Valentine spoke of Kirwan’s life and contributions, noting that he has had some recent medical problems. “With a home in the Heights, he was clearly, clearly one of us,” Valentine said, as people in the audience marked his passing with a moment of silence.
