Celebrate the Rockefeller Center Tree With Habitat on Saturday
Did you know that some of the lumber milled from the towering spruce tree that stood last year richly decorated at Rockefeller Center is now part of a house restored by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh on East Parmenter Street?
The public is welcomed to the dedication of the house, which will be the new home of the Exantus family, and to meet the author of the magical Christmas story of a boy who dreamed of building a home with the Rockefeller tree.
Tour the new house at 26 East Parmenter Street at 1:30 pm, then stay for the dedication at 2 pm, followed by a reception at the Kimball building at 125 Washington Street, where you can meet David Rubel, author of “The Carpenter’s Gift: A Christmas Tale about the Rockefeller Center Tree,” will be at the reception for a reading and book signing! Copies of the book are available at the Habitat office for a donation of $20, and come with a commemorative bookplate made with paper from the Rockefeller Tree!
Warm Up With the Washingtons on Sunday
The public is invited to this free program at Washington’s Headquarters Historic Site on Liberty Street, where you can step back in time and experience the winter as it was in 1782.
Chat with historic interpreters, enjoy seasonal music performed by the Salmagundi Consort, and snack on hot cider and cookies by an outdoor fire. Enjoy an afternoon that recreates the mood of warmth and hospitality the Washingtons extended to their war-weary guests.
The Open House at Washington’s Headquarters on Sunday, December 11th, from 12 to 4 pm, is free thanks to the sponsorship of the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands.
