Two residents of West Parmenter Street came to City Hall on Monday to ask the city council for help in getting rid of drug dealers and prostitutes on their block, which runs from Mill Street to Williams Street.
One woman, who will remain unidentified, said in Spanish that she is afraid for her three children who have to walk down the block every school day. Another man, also to remain unidentified, said that his neighbors are awakened during the night by the noise in the street. The two residents said that drug dealers have taken over a house at 120 West Parmenter that is padlocked, though the dealers seem to have the key.
Police chief Michael Ferrara said that he was encouraged by residents who stepped up to report crime and said he wished that more people would step forward about problems in their neighborhood. He noted that the department has translators available to help Spanish-speaking residents.
Chief Ferrara also said that he came up with a plan to beef up security immediately on that block. “If a corner or a street is unattended and we don’t take action, it will get worse,” Ferrara said.
