The City of Newburgh police department has avoided layoffs slated for the end of this month by agreeing to a new contract with the city. The city council is set to meet on Tuesday to vote on the final agreement that was worked out by the PBA and acting City Manager Richard Herbek on Friday.
The new contract, which runs through 2012, guarantees no layoffs in the police department. In return, PBA members agreed to work without a raise for 2012, and, retroactively, for 2009, 2010 or 2011 . In total, officers will give back some $700,000 worth of salary and benefits, including personal, sick and vacation days, night differential and the return of three court officers to patrol., according to PBA attorney Paul Weber.
