Police in the city of Newburgh arrested a 15-year-old city resident on Wednesday and charged him with 18 counts of criminal mischief and graffiti-related misdemeanors.
Detective Joseph Cortez identified the teen after learning that his nickname is “SodaPop,” a graffiti tag that appeared throughout the city. He then got a sample of the tag from the teen and compared it with those seen on walls.
Police detective Sgt. Dan Cameron says that graffiti tagging is a quality of life crime that affects a lot of people and that the department is continuing its investigation. Police ask any city resident who have been victimized by graffiti with the tag name of “SodaPop” and who have not previously reported the incident to police to contact Detective Cortez at (845) 569-7539.
