Sometimes Santa’s helpers wear a badge. Recently, while conducting an interview during an investigation, two City of Newburgh Detectives, Lorenzo D’Angelico and Joe Cortez discovered that a family would not be having Christmas this year. The mother told the detectives that due to her current financial situation she could not afford presents or a tree, so her family would not be celebrating Christmas.
After leaving the home, the two detectives decided to intervene. With their own money, they bought a 6’ artificial tree and ornaments and delivered it to the family’s doorstep. A few days later, the two detectives saw the woman again. She reported that all four of her children slept under the tree the night it arrived.
Although neither detective wanted recognition, they reluctantly agreed to have their story told after it came to the attention of City officials. “As their supervisor, I am not surprised at their actions,” said Police Chief Michael Ferrara, “They reflect what is best about the City of Newburgh Police Department.”
Mayor-elect Judy Kennedy commented, “While the City of Newburgh has its problems, it also has great people with big hearts and a strong desire to make a positive difference. We wish to thank the two detectives for their kindness and all our residents who are constantly working to create a City in which we are all proud to live.”
