The three new members of the Newburgh City Council were feeling their way through their first official meeting at City Hall Monday evening. After the first resolution was introduced, new mayor Judy Kennedy whispered to long-time councilmember Regina Angelo asking if she should call for a motion next.
New councilman Cedric Brown did speak up against a proposal to spend $350,000 for emergency repairs to a sewer leak on Colden Street, though he later asked for people’s patience. “I am learning and I will do what is right for this city,” he said. The proposal, which was opposed by Councilman Dillard and Mayor Kennedy as well, was tabled.
Mayor Kennedy also admitted that she erred when she scheduled a meeting to form Citizen Action Teams on the same night as a Citizen’s Advisory Group that is bringing in new members from the ward system just initiated in the city. Kennedy said she wants to support the advisory group and will move the date for the Citizen Action Teams.
When the meeting was set to adjourn, Mayor Kennedy got another nudge and, with a smile, she brought the gavel down to end the proceedings.
