From the Newburgh Free Library
Brent De Joseph’s exhibit called “A Prelude to Destiny” will be on display in the lobby gallery of the Newburgh Free Library, 124 Grand St., during the month of February. A “Meet the Artist” reception will be held on Sat., Feb. 11 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the library and is open to the public.
His work includes abstract art, still lifes and photography. Born in Brooklyn, De Joseph describes himself as a “street smart” child who grew up to become a writer, poet, painter, film maker and artist. As a “visual” person, De Joseph is most inspired by the Impressionism art period.
In his bio statement, De Joseph outlines his development as an artist:
“I started out thinking that art needed to be completely representational, to the point of realism. Then one day I found Impressionism; more specifically Vincent Van Gogh. I was blown away and fell in love with the freedom and abstract nature of his paintings. I began to studying him and other greats for inspiration. I am completely self-taught, driven by a constant need to learn and evolve.
“My work consists of many different styles, including impressionism, emotionalism, still life, abstract, and mixed media. I paint, write, and photograph, what I feel or from the experiences I’ve had. At times I don’t even know why I paint, write, or photograph something, but I love it, and I hope that it shows. I want others, to feel the freedom that I have come to know and love, through art. My art gives me peace, and my art is real. “
The library is open from 9-9 Mon.-Thurs., 9-5 Fri. and Sat. and 1-5 on Sunday. For more information about library programs, please call 563-3619.
