Police had to use a taser gun and a K-9 dog to stop a brutal knife attack by an intoxicated man this morning in the city of Newburgh.
Officers Joseph Palermo and John Perez arrived on the scene at 105 Benkard Street at 10 am, where they saw 39-year-old Manuel Santiago stabbing an unidentified 22-year-old man. The officers drew their weapons and the assailant paused to look back at them, then continued stabbing the man.
Officer Perez used his taser gun on Santiago, who stopped stabbing but refused to drop his knife That’s when K9 Ruger was put into action and Santiago dropped his weapon.
The victim is in stable condition after being taken to Westchester Medical Center for treatment of his stab wounds. His mother, a 42-year-old Newburgh resident who tried to stop the stabbing before police arrived, had minor stab wounds.
Police say that the fight appeared to be the result of an earlier dispute between the two men, who are acquaintances. Santiago was charged with attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the second degree.
