The next race is Sunday, June 25th at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway, the first of two road races on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.
Sunday’s FireKeepers 400 will air live beginning at 1 p.m. MT (3 p.m. ET) on Fox Sports 1, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio channel 90 and MRN. Larson took his final lead when a push from Ryan Blaney propelled him past Busch on a restart with under 20 laps remaining.
Larson drove the No. 42 Cars 3/Target Chevrolet to victory at Michigan International Speedway in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series FireKeepers Casino 400 today. The finish was similar to the race at MI last August, when Larson took the lead on a restart with nine laps left en route to his first Cup win.
Kyle Larson earned his first MIS victory last August, leading 41 laps. Larson went inside to pass Busch on the restart.
“The 78 (Truex) was by far the class of the field, I thought”, Larson said. So I wasn’t really that nervous. “That killed us. Just wrong lane on the restart every single time all day long and couldn’t use the best auto to win”. For us to withstand a few restarts there with some tough competitors there was pretty important.
“Love my family over there; thanks for it all, guys”.
Kevin Harvick, who was fastest in each of the first two rounds of Friday’s time trials, fell off the pace in the third round and will start 11th. “The 3 Chevy was really, really fast, and it was cool to win it”. “Ya know, I can’t remember another Father’s Day present right now!” My dad is here today, too, so I’m looking forward to celebrating with him.
Many people, including drivers, NASCAR family members and fans, expressed their congratulations and urged the couple to get some sleep. now.
“I know I led a lot of laps, but it seemed like whenever he wanted to get the lead, (Truex) hit a nitro button and would just cruise up to the lead and check out”, Larson said. Elliott was second in both MI races past year, and again this time.
In his first full season with Stewart Haas Racing, Clint Bowyer’s form has been up and down, with six finishes between 11th and 15th as well as five top-10 runs in the No. 14 Ford. With Joey Logano, the lone Ford, posting the third fastest speed at 200.479 miles per hour.
“We’ve been so close to so many other wins”, Larson said.
“Yeah, you have no idea how good this feels”, Logano said. “Staying in qualifying trim all day just seems to suit us – we stay focused on one thing and we can get it right and tomorrow we’ll switch over and do race stuff, so looking forward to it. Love racing here at MI and hopefully have a good weekend”. Proud of the effort. “I’d like to think so”. “We have changed every spring we can change in these things”.
Denny Hamlin finished fourth and Jamie McMurray was fifth. We were able to race the 4 [Kevin Harvick], our teammate, Brad [Keselowski]. The Rochester Hills native finished 16th. “From younger drivers, we’ve seen it this year with Austin (Dillon) winning his first race and Ricky (Stenhouse) and myself and there’s a handful of others that are younger that are going to win a race pretty soon: Chase (Elliott) and Erik Jones and Daniel Suárez”.
