Uber drivers have long asked the company to include the ability to tip in the app.

“Now, riders have the option to recognize your service by adding a tip after their trip”, Uber wrote in an email to drivers.

Riders will have the option to tip directly in the app after each trip. The app suggests a $1, $2 or $5 tip, and riders can enter a custom amount.

Passengers taking rides with Uber can now tip their drivers, the ride-booking app announced Monday.

Tipping will also be available through the company’s UberEats food-delivery program.

The initiative for a half year of monthly changes was announced June 20, the same day that founder Travis Kalanick resigned as CEO, following a slew of company controversies.

In a statement Monday, Lyft illustrated the impact of its tipping feature on its driver earnings, while issuing a characteristic jab at its chief competitor.

According to the company, riders have up to seven days after the trip to rate the ride and add a tip, but if a rider wants to go back and tip a driver for a trip they already rated, they have up to 30 days to do so. “We’ve offered in-app tipping since our earliest days because it was the right thing to do, and our drivers have earned an extra $250 million as a result”.

It remains to be seen how tipping will work with Uber’s fleet of self-driving cars.

Still, the Independent Drivers’ Guild, which represents more than 50,000 app-based drivers in New York City, hailed the city ruling as a victory for its cause.
