UK police: 58 confirmed or presumed dead after London blaze

British media have reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior paneling on the 24-story tower in a renovation that was completed just previous year.

FIFTY-EIGHT people are missing and presumed dead in the Grenfell Tower disaster, the officer in charge of the investigation has said. He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the public housing block that was devastated by a fire early Wednesday.

“Sadly at this time, there are 58 people who we have been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and therefore, sadly, I have to assume that they are dead”, Cmdr.

“Those who mock health and safety, regulations and red tape need to take a hard look at the consequences of cutting these and ask themselves whether Grenfell Tower is a price worth paying”.

The search of the 24-floor building had been paused on Friday due to safety concerns, but has now resumed, Cundy said.

John Cowley, managing director of CEP Architectural Facades, which produced rainscreen panels and windows for Grenfell Tower’s cladding sub-contractor Harley Facades Ltd, said: “Reynobond PE is not banned in the UK”.

Cundy said police would consider criminal prosecutions if there is evidence of wrongdoing and the police investigation would include scrutiny of the renovation project.

They also expressed anger that the prime minister did not meet with survivors or victims of the fire when she initially visited the neighborhood following the tragedy. The meeting is unlikely to quell complaints that May has been slow to reach out to victims, despite her announcement of a $6.4 million emergency fund to help the displaced families.

She said earlier that the national mood is sombre but that Britain is resolute in the face of adversity. “I hope it won’t, but it may increase”.

A solemn Queen Elizabeth II marked a minute of silence for victims of the London high-rise inferno at the start of a procession Saturday to mark her official birthday.

“It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood”, Elizabeth said in a message on her official birthday.

The latest figure included the 30 already confirmed to have died in the devastating fire on Wednesday.

Scuffles broke out near the Kensington and Chelsea town hall offices Friday as demonstrators chanting “We want justice!” surged toward the doors.

On the lack of sprinklers in Grenfell Tower, and other buildings, he said: “My understanding is that the best expert advice is that retrofitting sprinklers may not always be the best technical way of ensuring fire safety in a building”. But in an interview about the fire, May ducked the questions.

The tragedy has provoked a big response from nearby communities that have donated food and shelter to the victim. Construction company Rydon made the refurbishment of the block worth Rs 8.7 million pound and was completed in July 2016.

Queen Elizabeth and her grandson Prince William visited a community center Friday where some survivors are being housed, with volunteers inundated with donations of clothes and food.

Two Underground lines near the fire area were partially shut down on Saturday to make sure that debris did not land on the tracks.

Reports suggest that a renovation project on Grenfell Tower past year intentionally did not include safety devices such as sprinklers and doors created to keep the fire from spreading. She said she has ordered daily progress reports on housing for those affected, and vowed the public inquiry into the disaster will be “open and transparent”.
