Martin was one of seven sailors who died when the Navy ship collided with a Filipino vessel called the ACX Crystal – a cargo ship almost four times bigger than the Navy ship – near its home port in Yokosuka, Japan, on Saturday.
The family said the Navy told them the cargo ship did not have its lights on at the time, and struck the ship at a high rate of speed.
Early Saturday morning a Philippine-flagged merchant ship collided into the side of a US warship off the coast of Japan.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the Japanese coastguard, Takeshi Aikawa, said that the collision happened at 1:30 a.m.
“The collision affected Fitzgerald’s forward starboard side above and below the water line, causing significant damage and associated flooding to two berthing spaces, a machinery space, and the radio room”, according to a statement from usa 7th Fleet.
The Japanese coast guard questioned crew members of the ACX Crystal, and officials may treat it as a case of professional negligence.

“That (1:30 a.m. crash time) is not our understanding”, Flanders told The Associated Press.
Despite the pain, Galarza said he’s able to find some comfort.
But the young sailor’s promising career was cut short when he was among seven who were killed when the Fitzgerald collided with a container ship off Japan on Saturday.
After a Navy destroyer crashed into a container ship off the coast of Japan over the weekend, seven members of the United States Navy were found dead. “Their deaths while on patrol in the Western Pacific are a sobering reminder of the dangers that the men and women of our military face every day”, he said.
Acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley said in a statement that he and the Navy were saddened by the loss.
