76ers get No. 1 pick from Celtics, chance to draft Fultz

According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, the Celtics’ “overflowing backcourt” factored into passing on Fultz. After Isaiah Thomas fell to hip injury in Game 2, the Celtics were short a man. “We think there’s a really good chance the player we’ll take at 3 is the same player we would have taken at 1″. Because of various trades, the Celtics will likely have seven first-round draft picks over the next three years. Barely three years later, he’s nearly certainly going to become the No. 1 pick in the National Basketball Association draft — and if he gets to start his pro career by calling Philadelphia his new home, he’ll be living roughly a 2 1/2-hour drive from his hometown of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. And in his contract season, Otto Porter Jr. broke out as one of the most efficient three-point shooters in the league.

As expected, factoring in post-rookie contracts shows the top picks are more valuable relative to later selections than the old trade value chart suggested. The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics for the first overall pick, as they plan to take point guard Markelle Fultz.

The trade is significant for the Phoenix Suns considering they sit No. 4 in the draft, and their former asset is included in the deal.

As the 2017 NBA Draft draws nearer, many scouts have opined that this draft could be the deepest over the past 10 years.

The only pick it likely doesn’t change is at No. 2, where if the Los Angeles Lakers are leaning toward Ball, they will take him. Back in 1993, it wasn’t clear if Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Webber could co-exist in a frontcourt (and Shaq was a big fan of Penny Hardaway), so No. 1 Webber switched hats with No. 3 Hardaway and Orlando also received three future first-round picks. This is where the Celtics come in.

The Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and Brooklyn Nets each have multiple first round picks and could elect to attempt to trade up in the draft, especially as the Detroit Pistons are reportedly considering trading their lottery pick for a veteran.

With their 3rd overall pick, Philly can take some sensational players that will immediately make an impact in the National Basketball Association. “And (Jayson) Tatum. And (Josh) Jackson”, Ainge said. Philadelphia is already stacked in their frontcourt with Embiid in the middle and the emergence of Dario Saric. This is exactly the kind of situation where a team that’s collected assets like Philadelphia has should cash them in. That’s why they can offer their No. 3 pick along with some other first-round picks for 2018 and 2019, and could even add Jahlil Okafor to the package. Even without Fultz, General Manager Danny Ainge has created a team that can win now through a series of moves in which he has emerged as the clear victor. Regardless of the player he becomes, as a second round pick, Pasecniks would be well worth the risk.

“I think Fultz is a terrific prospect, but I don’t know if he’s ballooned to an extent that people are talking about him like he’s definitely going to be this transcendent cornerstone, generational player”, O’Connor said. However, their issue with size and defense could still be glaring with Thomas playing side-by-side with Ball. He will add more size to the team as well.

But while Colangelo’s shot fired Ainge’s way could be a bit of gamesmanship with a rival he’s expecting to battle against as the East’s next great team, it was more a sign of respect from Colangelo, who admitted that it’s hard to do business with Ainge because they know one another so well dating back to their days with the Suns. So I think it’s false to say that Fultz wasn’t trying because his team was bad.
