Boss turns crisis into win with LA 2028 deal — IOC

Paris has insisted on hosting the 2024 games, indicating that public subsidies would not be available four years later.

Estanguet, Hidalgo and the Paris bid committee all insisted that talks would continue with Los Angeles and the IOC. Mayor Eric Garcetti has signaled that L.A. would likely end up with the 2028 event, noting last week that the 2024 bid “is not probably most likely to happen”.

And now, to top it all off, they’ll be hosting the Summer Olympics in 2028.

L.A. officials estimate the 2028 Games will cost approximately $5.3 billion and expect to cover most costs through revenue from sponsorships and ticket sales.

“The Los Angeles City Council and United States Olympic Committee Board of Directors will consider the agreement for approval in August”, the bid committee said. Paris will get the momentous opportunity to host the games in 2024.

The dual award of the Games relieves the International Olympic Committee of having to test the global interest in hosting the Summer Olympics for several years until the 2032 Games are up for grabs.

Los Angeles was not even the first American entrant in the contest.

“The City of Los Angeles is a proud and enthusiastic partner in this “win-win-win” scenario”, he said. One other advantage of waiting until 2028 for the Games to come to the U.S.: “It virtually guarantees that Donald Trump, who has been supportive of the bid but is unpopular overseas within the International Olympic Committee membership, will no longer be president”.

2028 will mark the third time the Summer Olympics have come to Southern California, joining the Games of 1932 and 1984.

The IOC paved the way for the historic dual award with a unanimous vote earlier this month to try to reach a deal with the two cities.
