Cristiano Ronaldo accused of 14.7 million euro tax evasion

Real Madrid have expressed “full confidence” in Cristiano Ronaldo after their star forward was accused of tax fraud by the Spanish authorities.

“The denunciation implies that everything derives from the participation of a tax haven structure, similar to that of other players”, Gestifute said.

Ronaldo is the best paid athlete in the world, according to a report last week by Forbes magazine, which estimated that he earned $93 million over the past 12 months.

The prosecutor’s office in Madrid said that it had filed a lawsuit against Ronaldo, but the Portugal global has denied the accusations.

Ronaldo’s agent denied any wrongdoing.

On this occasion he is accused of knowingly using a “business structure” to hide income made from his image rights.

It has also been claimed that Ronaldo reported income as coming from real estate, which reduced his tax rate significantly.

The Portuguese-born star defrauded the tax authorities of 1.4 million euros in 2011, 1.7 million euros in 2012, 3.2 million euros in 2013 and 8.5 million euros in 2014, prosecutors allege.

Additionally, the prosecutor also accused Ronaldo of declaring €11.5m ($12.8m) earned in 2011-14 in a tax return filed in 2014, when the prosecutor said Ronaldo’s real income during that period was nearly €43m ($48m).

However since both men have no prior criminal history and the sentence is below 2 years, they will spend no time behind bars. That is because, under Spanish law, first-time offenders do not have to spend time in prison if the term is for two years or less.

Madrid have now also offered their support to the four-time Ballon d’Or victor, believing him to be innocent of any wrongdoing. He helped Real Madrid win La Liga (Spain’s first division) and the UEFA Champions League last season.
