Conor McGregor, as the premier UFC fighter, knows how to win fights with elbows, knees and kicks, but if he employs those tactics in his August 26 boxing match with Mayweather, the penalties would be severe. He’s younger than the 40-year-old boxing legend, has a two-inch reach advantage and will be the heavier fighter when they step into the ring in 73 days. The contracted weight for the fight is 154 pounds.
Mayweather is the strong favourite but Holm, who will face Brazil’s Bethe Correia in Singapore, said fights can be unpredictable.
“I talked to him this morning, he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather on August 26, and he wants to defend his title this year too”, White said on Wednesday.
The main question surrounding the bout is the rules the fighters would adhere to, with many concerned that Mayweather’s vastly superior boxing skills would make a standard boxing match a walkover.
But as we saw in this interview, White seemed more than willing to talk up that fight as part of a huge end of the year for combat sports.
Teddy Atlas believes Conor McGregor is in for a rude awakening when he meets Floyd Mayweather.
The event is expected to generate more than half a billion dollars and has every chance of breaking the pay per view record of 4.5 million buys, set when Mayweather met Manny Pacquiao in May 2015.
Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers in history. “You can’t be guaranteed anybody’s ever going to fight again”.
“I just feel that these are two separate sports and you have McGregor who is the best at what he does, and you have Mayweather who is the best at what he does”. When asked what the regulations would be, White said: “Boxing“.
UFC boss Dana White said McGregor would go after Mayweather and try to “knock him out”. Ellerbe responded. “It’s a very, very hot fight, and a fight that the fans want”.
If Mayweather wins this fight, he could finish his career at a flawless 50-0. Compromise is exactly what both sides did, however, and the announcement was made final Wednesday that the fight would indeed take place.
