Larson, Truex take top 2 spots in Michigan qualifying

Three times, Kyle Larson needed to outrace the rest of the contenders on late restarts.

The first caution flag waved after seven laps for a garbage bag flying on the front stretch at Michigan International Speedway.

NASCAR takes its action to Michigan Sunday for the Firekeepers Casino 400 at the Michigan International Speedway.

Race victor Kyle Larson concurred with Truex when he told the media in post-race interviews, “The (No.) 78 was by far the class of the field”. Everyone else is more than 100 points behind. Bowyer finished in 26th place. “That killed us. Just wrong lane on the restart every single time all day long and couldn’t use the best vehicle to win”. This is our second Cup win of the year, but we’ve had five second-place finishes. “Had a lot of laps – I think we had 86 laps on our left side tires – and just couldn’t quite get it there at the end”.

It was the third Cup win of Larson’s career and 14th by Chip Ganassi Racing. He’s winless in 56 career Cup races, but he’s fifth in points in 2017. There’s always something you could do a little bit better, and our lap in the third round was the same way… Congratulations to Kyle (Larson). “He had a fast auto today and we’ll try to go get ‘em next week”.

It was to be expected after the No. 22 team finished 20th or worse in its previous five races. He beat Elliott in last June’s race at MIS. While there’s no doubting Larson’s talent, the same can not be said for the perennially underachieving Chip Ganassi-owned team, which before this season struggled to provide its drivers with winning equipment.

“Late in the race, we were just able to line up in the right lanes”, Larson said, commenting on the importance of staying in the narrow race groove at MIS. Both of them we’ve been successful at.

Logano had another reason to be excited. After the race, a message on his Twitter account announced that he and wife Brittany are expecting a child in January. Larson was first off that restart, only to be slowed by another caution after a multicar incident on the backstretch; Danica Patrick was knocked off the track and into the wall. He led the first 34 laps of the race. He won by 0.993 seconds.

“I don’t know why they’ve got to throw so many damn debris yellow”, he said.

“For me, especially chasing this dream and growing up in California, I wanted to move to North Carolina and be in the NASCAR scene”, Johnson said Thursday. For us to withstand a few restarts there with some tough competitors there was pretty important.

Brad Keselowski has 7/1 odds to win today and I like those odds for him on his home track. It also gave him a fine Father’s Day present as he celebrated in Victory Lane with his 2-year-old son, Owen. My dad is here today, too. They’re insisting the driver dress up as Chewbacca, and he’s really looking forward to “sweating my butt off in some big fury costume this Halloween”.

Cars 3” will likely finish No. 1 in the box office over the weekend, on track to for a $60 million debut according to reports. The Porsche No. 2 had been held up for more than an hour due to technical problems and at one point was in 56th place. Thanks to his 10 stage wins this season (no other driver has more than four) and his two victories, Truex has 20 bonus points which will carry over for the first three segments of NASCAR’s playoffs. The Tennessee driver had a 3.825-second pass at 316.38 miles per hour. I go, ‘Why did you do that?’ I never actually say it; I keep my mouth shut because I know it works out at the end.
