The long-awaited Evo Japan lineup has finally been revealed.
Evo has lived comfortably in Las Vegas every July, but the folks behind the event are ready to branch out and head out to the far east. Evo Japan is set to run from January 26-28 from Tokyo and prior to Sunday’s Street Fighter V top 8, viewers were treated to the full slate of games for the event. Eight games will be headlining the event: Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd, King of Fighters XIV, BlazBlue: Central Fiction and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as an old fan favorite.
Evo Japan isn’t just the first time that it’s going overseas – it’s the first time that the world-famous fighting game tournament’s held events more than once a calendar year. Like Smash Bros., Icons will allow two to four players to duke it out with one another. Numerous character move-sets seen in the trailer seem like they draw a lot of inspiration from various characters from the cast of Melee like Marth, Captain Falcon, and Fox. That’s three more days of fighting goodness to kick off the new year. But if you stuck around the Smash Bros. games for their fighting gameplay and liked what was done with Project M, you’ll want to check out what Wavedash has in store with their new full game. Licensing issues were cited as a reason why the game did not make the lineup of Evo Japan’s preview event, Sai.
It’s been a long time coming. A Japanese Evo event was originally announced in 2010 and was scheduled for May 2011, but the deadly Tohoku earthquakes in March of 2011 forced the event’s indefinite postponement.
The first Evo Japan tournament was announced in September 2016.
