U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, has shown improvement over the last 36 hours after being shot by a gunman who opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a baseball practice earlier in the week, his lead surgeon said on Friday.
Scalise’s condition was upgraded to “serious”, from “critical” after undergoing another surgery on Saturday, according to a statement from Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Sava said he told Scalise’s family that “I am not declaring victory until he’s playing ball in his back yard with his family”.
As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be “able to walk and hopefully run” in the future. The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said.
Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against United States president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise’s security detail and other police officers.
The man who shot senior Republican congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice session this week had a list containing the names of three politicians, officials said.
He has undergone several surgeries since Wednesday’s shooting. Hodgkinson was shot by police and died of his injuries.
Scalise, 51, who represents a district in Louisiana and is the House majority whip, had previously been listed in critical condition.
Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise’s body, but “we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point”. The hospital says Scalise “will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time”.
Republicans and Democrats are fighting for bragging rights in their annual Congressional Baseball game, and doing so as one unit – Team Scalise. Six people were injured during the attack, including two congressmen, a congressional aide, a lobbyist and two police officers.
The FBI said it was investigating the shooter’s “activities and social media impressions” in the months leading up to the attack.
